Durango to Moab
This route follows 215-miles of secondary dirt roads from Durango, CO across the high alpine tundra of the San Juan Mountains to the desert slickrock and canyon country of Moab UT. This route is more remote, rugged and 25% more difficult than its sister, Telluride to Moab Route. It is designed for upper-intermediate riders in good physical condition. Alternate Single-Track Routes between various huts extend your trip and offer more challenges. San Juan Hut Systems does not allow vehicle support while using the huts.
Why hire a guide? First, and most important, your guide will get you to your hut every night without looking at the map 100 times a day or arguing with your friends on the correct way to go. Some of the huts along this route are difficult to navigate to. This has caused late night phone calls to the Forest service and in several cases riders have had to sleep out overnight in their riding clothes only to find the hut at first light! Also, we know about all the singletrack alternates that you may miss on your own. Your guide will also be able to provide mechanical support. All our guides are also bicycle mechanics and will be able to provide on the trail repairs. We will provide you with a list of spare parts to bring for YOUR bike (ie spokes, tubes etc) as well as a group list to be divided between everyone (cables, chains etc) but beyond that we can take care of any repairs. Also, if a major mechanical happens we can arrange for another mechanic to bring out a part or replacement bike. Your guide is Wilderness First Responder Certified and very well versed in the signs and treatment of Altitude sickness, a common problem on these trips. Should any emergency arise during the trip your guide will be able to treat the person and evacuate them safely should it be needed.
At the end of your trip we will also take care of your shuttle service picking you up in Moab and bringing you back to Ridgway, Telluride or Montrose.
